Is CMMI cost-prohibitive for companies under 100 FTEs?

Dear CMMI Appraiser – My business partner is interested in adopting the CMMI framework for software process improvement, but, to be honest, do we have any business trying to adopt CMMI? We’re no Northrop Grumman or Lockheed-Martin. We are proud to be a growing firm that’s committed to doing things the right way, but I assume the CMMI is cost-prohibitive for a company under 100 FTEs like us. Am I right? ~ Joseph “Jody” D.

Well the assumtion on dramatically quality improvement for FTE doesnot stand. We as small software company are comming from caves. Actually we have few but the best people, implement best practices that prove god results, and run sixsigma projects. So prices to assess compliance with CMMI is prohibitive. Honestly i do not expect after an appraisal process to become smarter over the hight on things invented years ago!!!

Bogdan,

I think you are missing the point. There is NOTHING about an appraisal (in itself) that improves performance - that would be like saying taking a test improves your knowledge - of course it doesn't. But your logic implies that you also believe that going to school, learning, and practicing your skill doesn't improve performance, simply because there is a test at the end! An appraisal is simply like a test - a way to validate that the learning and improvements have taken place. It's the learning and improvements that are the important part. Stop focusing on levels and start focusing on improvements - and it will all become clear!
